Sandra has served as Thurston County Commissioner since 2009. As chair of the board, she represents the county on a number of boards, councils, and commissions, including the Thurston Regional Planning Council (chair), Animal Services, Nisqually River Council, Puget Sound Partnership Salmon Recovery Council, Alliance for a Healthy South Sound, the Washington State Voluntary Stewardship Program, and the Washington Counties Risk Pool. Prior to her election to the county, Commissioner Romero worked in Pakistan for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and served for 12 years as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives, serving Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and parts of Thurston County. During her time in the House, she served on the Building Code Council in 2003, chaired both the House of Representatives’ State Government and Local Government committees, and was co-chair of the joint House and Senate Alternative Contracting Methods Oversight Committee. Sandra is married to Fred Romero and has two adult children and two grandchildren, all living in Thurston County. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College.
