Description This report summarizes the sixth year of a long-term study to evaluate contaminant trends in age-dated sediment cores across the state. In 2011, sediment cores were collected from Angle, Samish, and Nahwatzel Lakes and analyzed for mercury, lead, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Contaminant trends varied by lake and constituent. Angle Lake sediments contained the highest levels of metals and PAHs, which showed modest declines in the top sediment layer. All contaminants in the Samish Lake core declined since their maximums. Metals increased and PAHs were erratic in the top 10 cm of the Nahwatzel Lake core.
