General Characterization of PCBs in South Lake Washington Sediments

|Description||Surface sediments in south Lake Washington were measured for PCBs. PCB levels were found to be similar across the study area with some spatial patterns. Total PCB Aroclor concentrations ranged from 3 to 57 ug/Kg, parts per billion, dry weight. A single sediment core showed the expected historical pattern of PCB production, use, and ban of PCBs.
A model was used to predict PCB concentrations in fish tissue using data from the study. The model predicted that as much as 98% of the PCBs in fish tissue are from sediments, even though surface sediment concentrations are relatively low.
