Description The Washington State Department of Ecology is conducting a large-scale study to characterize the environmental variability of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) over space, time, and depth in Puget Sound and the greater Salish Sea. This project is referred to as the Ocean Acidification Monitoring at Ecology’s Greater Puget Sound Stations (OMEGA) Project (see section 3.0 for further explanation). OMEGA will serve as Phase II of earlier ocean acidification (OA) work undertaken to add DIC and TA sampling to ongoing marine monitoring work. Previous OA studies in the Salish Sea have largely focused on its seaward reaches subjected to stronger oceanic forcing. Instead, OMEGA will focus on its shallow, river-dominated shelf regions, including Bellingham Bay, Whidbey Basin, South Sound, and waters around major urban centers in central Puget Sound, subject to seasonally variable freshwater forcing. DIC and TA samples will be collected in the upper water column at 20 marine monitoring stations for 24 months. Data generated will also be used to validate the Salish Sea Model which was recently expanded to incorporate OA modeling capabilities. OMEGA will enhance the frequency and coverage of existing OA monitoring, and improve our understanding of OA dynamics across the diverse spectrum of seascapes in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea.
