|Description||Ecology’s Freshwater Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program collected fish at 11 sites from six areas in the Cowlitz River in 2016. Laboratory analyses were performed on 53 composite samples, which were created using 235 individual fish representing six species.
Goals were to characterize contaminant concentrations in fish. Chemicals frequently detected were mercury, PCBs, PBDEs, DDTs, and dioxins/furans. PCBs were highest in whole largescale sucker (411 ug/kg) and fillets from northern pikeminnow (54 ug/kg). Mercury was highest in fillets from northern pikeminnow (566–1010 ug/kg) and largemouth bass (316–610 ug/kg).
Concentrations of mercury, PCBs, PBDEs, and DDTs in most fillets of cutthroat trout, mountain whitefish, and northern pikeminnow from the Cowlitz River near Vader appear to be lower than those sampled in 1995 and 2005; however, small sample sizes and differences in the sizes and ages of these species across years confounded temporal trend analyses. Concentrations of PCBs in whole largescale suckers appear to be the same for 1995 and 2016.
Spatial trends appeared to be present, with concentrations of DDTs, PCBs, and PBDEs increasing from upstream to downstream sites.
Results support the current 303(d) listings and suggest that additional listings for mercury and PCBs may result from the next Water Quality Assessment.
