Description In September 2014, the Department of Ecology conducted a study to characterize PCB concentrations in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) from Lake Spokane. Fifteen individual whole carp were analyzed for lipids and PCB Aroclors and a subset for PCB congeners. The size distribution of these 15 carp was representative of an earlier population survey of 639 carp from Lake Spokane.

Total PCB Aroclors were used to calculate an average of 0.0027 grams per carp, within the length range of 569 to 798 millimeters. A range of 0.0015 – 0.0041 grams, based on the 95% confidence interval, was used to estimate a range of PCB masses. These numbers can be used to estimate bulk PCB removal in future carp removal efforts.
