T Plant 277-T Outdoor Storage Area Closure Unit Group 28 (CUG-28)

[TSD ID#: TS-2-7] Located in Hanford's 200 West Area, T Plant was the first large-scale plutonium separation facility. It performed separations from 1945 to 1956 and is now being used for storage, waste treatment and repackaging activities. Located on the northwest side of the 221-T Canyon Building, the 277-T Outdoor Storage Area is two concrete slabs and an asphalt covered area surrounding the 277-T Building. The outdoor storage area was used to store numerous waste containers over time. The unit was not authorized for permitted storage and is closing. The waste containers have all been removed, but the concrete slabs and asphalt areas must be clean closed. The concrete slabs will be decontaminated and focused soil samples will be taken underneath the concrete slabs and beneath a blow-down drain location on the north side of the 277-T building. Statistical grid soil samples will be taken under the areas covered with asphalt.
