242-A Evaporator Operating Unit Group 4 (OUG-4)
[TSD ID#: T-2-6] Located in Hanford’s 200 East Area, it began operating in 1977. This unit accepts waste from the double-shell tanks and boils it to extract water and concentrate the waste, which goes back to the double-shell tanks. This creates more space in the double-shell tanks so waste can be transferred from the older, noncompliant single-shell tanks. Each evaporator campaign makes about 500,000 gallons of tank space available. The condensate goes to LERF-ETF for treatment.
Enforceable Permit:
Issued in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Hazardous Waste Management Act, Chapter 70.105 Revised Code of Washington (RCW), and the regulations promulgated there under in Chapter 173‑303 Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
