Waste Receiving and Processing Facility Operating Unit Group
7
(OUG-7)
[TSD ID#: TS-2-4] Located in Hanford’s 200 West Area, this unit began operating in 1997, and can treat up to 3,408 gallons/day. It handles mostly transuranic (plutonium-contaminated) and mixed transuranic waste. It receives, examines, and treats waste from Hanford’s burial grounds. Treatment is done through a variety of methods, such as compacting, repackaging, and encapsulating. This is also the point from which transuranic wastes leave Hanford to be disposed of in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.
