Waste Encapsulating and Storage Facility Operating Unit Group 14
(OUG-14)
[TSD ID#: S-2-10] Located in Hanford’s 200 East Area, adjoining B Plant, WESF began operating in 1974. This facility stores 1,902 capsules of cesium-137 and strontium-90 underwater. The capsules are about 21 inches long. The waste came from Hanford’s underground storage tanks in a campaign in the 1970s to remove the extremely radioactive materials.
