[TSD ID#: D-2-9] Located in Hanford’s 200 Area, this unit is a disposal trench for defueled reactor cores from the U.S. Navy’s submarines and other nuclear-powered ships. The trench holds more than 100 defueled reactor cores. One or two cores come to Hanford each year from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The dangerous waste in the cores is lead.
