Double-Shell Tank System & 204-AR Waste Unloading Station Operating Unit Group 12 (OUG-12)
[TSD ID#: S-2-3 and T-2-3] Located in Hanford’s central plateau, this unit consists of 28 double-shell tanks and related equipment organized into six groups (or farms) and the inactive 204-AR Facility. It also includes the cross-site transfer lines that move waste from the 200 West Area to 200 East Area (where the treatment facilities are). The tanks store about 26 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous waste resulting from dissolving irradiated fuel rods to recover plutonium. The tanks have two liners--a tank within a tank--and have leak-detection monitoring between the tanks. The 204-AR Facility can receive and hold waste to adjust its pH. The 204- AR Facility is inactive and will not be used until it meets dangerous waste regulations.
