Grout Treatment Facility Closure Unit Group 23 (CUG-23)
[TSD ID#: li-2-1] Located in Hanford’s 200 East Area, this unit consists of four underground vaults. One holds one million gallons of phosphate sulfate waste simulant that was grouted in a a pilot test. Before the decision to vitrify all tank waste, Hanford’s plan was to dispose of the low-activity tank waste in grout. But that approach was abandoned in the 1990s. This facility is unnecessary. Ecology is denying USDOE’s permit application for this unit.
