Single-Shell Tank System Closure Unit Group 4 (CUG-4)

[TSD ID#: S-2-4] This unit consist of 149 single-shell tanks and related equipment in 12 groups (called farms) in Hanford’s 200 East and 200 West areas. The tanks hold about 30 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous waste resulting from dissolving irradiated fuel rods to recover plutonium. The tanks have only one liner, and do not comply with dangerous waste regulations. But because they must continue to store waste until vitrification creates more space in the double-shelled tanks, we are imposing operating conditions for monitoring, waste retrieval, and storage.
