Other Mixed Waste Permits

In addition to providing oversight and permitting for cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site, the Nuclear Waste Program provides oversight to the commercial Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility subleased by US Ecology Washington, Inc., French nuclear fuels fabricator AREVA NP, Inc., waste treatment facility Perma-Fix Northwest, and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

AREVA makes nuclear fuel for commercial nuclear reactors under a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The process produces dangerous and mixed (radioactive and chemically hazardous) waste. Ecology’s permit to AREVA is for storage of those wastes until they are shipped offsite to an approved disposal facility. The current permit was issued February 2, 2010 and will remain in effect until February 2, 2020.
