Release wild chinook on 3 Columbia River tributaries and Drano Lake; Klickitat River season modified

Action: Spring chinook with adipose fins intact must be released in Drano Lake and the lower Wind, White Salmon and Klickitat rivers. The Klickitat River will be open three days per week with a one fish (salmon or steelhead) daily limit.

Effective dates:

Drano Lake downstream of markers on point of land downstream and across from Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery and upstream of the Highway 14 Bridge: March 16 through June 30 except closed Wednesdays beginning April 12 and continuing through May 31.

Wind River from mouth (boundary line/markers) to 400 feet below Shipherd Falls: March 16 through June 30.

White Salmon River from markers on the east and west shores and when buoys are in place southerly to the buoys and east-west between the buoys upstream to the powerhouse: April 1 through June 30.

White Salmon River from the powerhouse to 400 feet downstream from Northwestern (Condit) Dam: April 1 through June 15.

Klickitat River from mouth to Fisher Hill Bridge: Open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays only from April 1 through May 31. Open 7 days per week June 1 through July 31.

Klickitat River from 400 feet upstream from #5 fishway to boundary markers below Klickitat Salmon Hatchery: June 1 through July 31.

Species affected: Chinook and steelhead

Daily limits: Drano Lake and the Wind and White Salmon rivers: Daily limit is a total of 2 salmon or steelhead, or one of each. Release all wild chinook and wild steelhead. Minimum size 12 inches for salmon and 20 inches for steelhead.

Klickitat River: From April 1 through May 31, the daily limit is one salmon or steelhead. Release all wild chinook and wild steelhead. Minimum size 12 inches for salmon and 20 inches for steelhead.

Klickitat River: From June 1 through July 31, the daily limit is 6 salmon no more than 2 adults except jacks only from 400 feet above #5 fishway to boundary markers below Klickitat Salmon Hatchery. Trout daily limit is 2 fish. Release all wild chinook and wild steelhead. Minimum size is 12 inches for both salmon and trout.

Reason for action: All spring chinook returning to Carson, Little White Salmon, and Klickitat hatcheries are expected to be adipose fin clipped. Selective fisheries will maximize opportunity for hatchery chinook while minimizing potential impacts to wild fish, in particular on the Klickitat River.

The 1,300 adult spring chinook expected to return to the Klickitat River in 2006 will not support a full sport fishery while meeting escapement needs.

Other Information: Wind River from 100 feet above Shipherd Falls to 400 feet below the coffer dam and from 100 feet above the coffer dam to boundary markers 800 yards downstream of Carson National Fish Hatchery: Open for salmon and hatchery steelhead May 1 through June 30. Both adipose fin-clipped and unclipped Chinook may be retained from this area of the river. The daily limit and minimum size is the same as below Shipherd Falls.

Night closure and non buoyant lure restrictions in effect March 16 through June 30 in Drano Lake and the Wind River and April 1 through May 31 on the Klickitat River. When non-buoyant lure restrictions are in effect, only fish hooked inside the mouth may be retained.

It is unlawful to totally remove from the water any salmon or steelhead to be released.
