McNary Pool shifts to catch-and-release fishing for white sturgeon year-round

Action: Anglers fishing the McNary Pool must release all sturgeon.

Effective: Feb. 1, 2020.

Location: McNary Pool (Lake Wallula), including the Hanford Reach and Snake River upstream to Ice Harbor Dam.

Species affected: White sturgeon.

Reason for action: The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission in December approved multiple modifications to white sturgeon sport fishery regulations statewide to address conservation measures. This emergency regulation implements the decision to shift retention fisheries upstream of McNary Dam to catch-and-release fishing only.

Additional information: Catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon will continue to be allowed. This modification will become a permanent regulation in 2020. The area affected includes the Columbia River from McNary Dam upstream to Priest Rapids Dam and the Snake River from the confluence with the Columbia River upstream to Ice Harbor Dam. These measures were implemented to help ensure the long-term viability of the population by helping to improve abundance of white sturgeon.

Information contact: Region 5, 360-696-6211; Region 3, 509-575-2740.
