June 30, 2004

Release of sport caught sturgeon required starting July 12 between John Day and McNary Dams

Action: The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will require anglers to release white sturgeon caught between John Day Dam and McNary Dam on the Columbia River.

Effective date: 12:01 a.m., July 12, through Dec. 31, 2004.

Species affected: Sturgeon

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam.

Reason for action: The cut-off date for retention of sturgeon was adopted because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate that the harvest guideline of 165 fish will be achieved by July 12.

Other information: The reservoirs and tributaries between Bonneville Dam and John Day Dam will remain closed to retention through Dec. 31.
