Columbia River spring chinook sport fishery closed from Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam

Action: The mainstem Columbia River from Bonneville Dam upstream to McNary Dam will close to spring chinook and steelhead angling. The Columbia River from Bonneville Dam downstream to Buoy 10 is already closed to spring chinook, steelhead, and shad angling.

Effective date: 12:01 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2004.

Species affected: Chinook salmon and steelhead.

Location: Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam.

Reason for action: Impact limits on ESA-listed upriver spring chinook have been achieved in non-Indian fisheries based on the current run size of 200,000. Upriver chinook passage at Bonneville Dam has not met pre-season management expectations.

Other information: No modifications were made to the hatchery steelhead and hatchery chinook jack fisheries on the Columbia River scheduled to open May 16 below I-5 bridge and June 16 above I-5 Bridge. These fisheries are expected to occur as planned. Shad angling remains open in the area from Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam, and re-opens May 16 from Bonneville Dam downstream.
