Course Description:

The media is increasingly involved with the daily operations of law enforcement entities. On any given day, the majority of news stories, especially in major metropolitan areas, have a law enforcement aspect. Your response to media requests and interaction with the media can have an effect on the success of your case, the apprehension of a suspect, the public’s perception of law-enforcement, and may even have legal ramifications. This 8 hour course will give you an overview of the basic duties and responsibilities of the Public Information Officer, and give you opportunities to apply your knowledge.  Topics include:

  • Scene management
  • Press releases
  • On-camera appearances
  • Press conferences
  • Public relations and Community Oriented Policing

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Dress Code & Identification:

  • Uniforms, agency logo clothing or business casual attire is appropriate for classroom wear.
  • Visible Agency official ID is recommended (badges / agency IDs) while on campus.

Audience: This course is appropriate for new Public Information Officers, and all law enforcement and corrections personnel who actually or potentially interact with the media.

Cost: Free

Suggested Equipment: Laptop computer or tablet with word processing capabilities.
