DOC Narcotic Dog Academy

This course is offered through Barbara Davenport, K-9 trainer for the Department of Corrections. Barbara is in her 30th year of providing narcotic detection dog academies. Training includes handler training, dogs and instructor training to outside agencies. Each class is 6 weeks (240 hours) with a one week break mid-class.

Barbara supplies three dogs per class, however applicants have the option to bring their own dog. Letters of request are handled on a first come first served basis, regardless of agency size.

Agencies are encouraged to submit letters even if classes appear full as there is always movement on the list due to cancellations and re-scheduling.

The DOC Narcotic Dog Academy has moved from McNeil Island to the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.

Administrative fee is $1500.00 which includes the dog or $1000.00 if the Agency supplies the dog. Agency dogs must be screened by the training staff prior to the start of class.

Agency dogs are the responsibility of the Agency.

Please contact Barbara for more information.
