BLEA - Field Training Workshops

This 4-hour workshop introduces field training officers to the curriculum changes at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

All current and future BLEA sessions have transitioned to adult learning and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) delivery methods. While the content of the BLEA has not changed significantly, the way that students are presented the academic content and the processes they use in their learning are different. Students are now more interactive with the instructors and each other. Hands-on learning is a focus of these student-centered teaching techniques. While discipline and professionalism is still a focal point at the academy where appropriate, the classroom environment has changed, more closely resembling a college classroom.

WSCJTC is offering workshops around the state to help field training officers prepare for the transition of these new students into FTO/PTO programs. These four-hour workshops provide an overview of the new BLEA curriculum and specifically address anticipated new student behaviors and performances. For FTOs this includes possible differences in scores received on the Daily Observation Report (DOR). Each session is limited to 20 participants, allowing for a high level of interaction with the facilitators and allowing trainers to address their concerns and questions about new methodologies in use at the BLEA.

Prerequisite:   Current employment with a Washington State Criminal Justice agency.

Cost:   None.
