Child Abuse Investigation & Assessment, Course #5357

Course Description:

“Child Abuse Investigation & Interviewing" is a week-long multidisciplinary course for WA State law enforcement investigators, prosecutors, and specialized child interviewers. (Out-of-state applicants are accepted only on a space-available basis two weeks prior to course start and with payment of a $500 fee.) The training is co-sponsored by the WA State CJTC and DSHS Children's Administration, and CPS workers and other DSHS employees must register for the class through DSHS.

  • The focus is on improving investigative skills in child sexual abuse and physical abuse cases, with emphasis on the investigative interview with the child.
  • It is designed to meet the training required by RCW 43.101.224.
  • A separate criminal justice track on day five addresses other aspects of the investigation in addition to the child interview, including electronic surveillance techniques, scene searches, and suspect interrogation techniques.

Each applicant will:

  • Take a quiz at the beginning of class Monday morning and complete a written closed-book essay test Friday morning
  • Receive information on current state-of-the-art research-based investigative interview techniques
  • Practice interview skills by interviewing actors using suspected child abuse scenarios
  • Be critiqued in a supportive peer environment
  • Learn the importance of cultural influences on the investigative interview and how to structure interviews to gain the most accurate information
  • Learn considerations for effective interviews of victims with special needs
  • Learn to defend interviews in court
  • Receive the most recent Washington State Child Interview Guide and Quick Reference card.

Pre-Course Work:

All students are expected to complete the pre-class reading assignments - there will be a quiz at the beginning of the class on Monday morning related to this information.

Class Expectations:

  • All students will conduct two practice interviews with actors role-playing children in suspected abuse situations.
  • A written closed-book essay test regarding knowledge relevant to child interviewing will take place at the beginning of Day five.

 

Cost:

  • None for WA State law enforcement, prosecutors, CPS and child interviewers;
  • $500 for out-of-state applicants.

  • Fee: $100 for Mandated / $500 for Non-Mandated.

Dress Code & Identification:

  • Uniforms, agency logo clothing or business casual attire is appropriate for classroom wear.
  • Visible Agency official ID is recommended (badges / agency IDs) while on campus.

  • 8:30 am -4:30 pm Tuesday thru Friday/ DSHS Only- Friday will end at 3:00 pm
