Communications Training Officer, Course #0739

The Communications Training Officer is course giving students the knowledge, skills and abilities to train and evaluate new telecommunicators in a one-on-one setting.  This class focuses on the trainer.

CTO is a class recommended for new trainers who will train within a structured program.  CTO is a 32 hour course that includes some pre-course reading.  Student must pass the post-course exam with 70% or higher to pass.  Non-renewable certificates are given for passing this class.

  • Comparison of two models:  San Jose and the Adult Training Model (foundation in the Reno Model)

    • Evidence-based adult learning methods – Grounded Brain-based teaching
    • Learning Domains
  • Matching teaching methods to tasks and learners
  • Techniques and methods to use with different types of learners and for different types of tasks
  • Use of Socratic questioning techniques
  • Evaluating Performance and Skills
  • Use of feedback and feedback model
  • Evaluation methods
  • Documentation
  • Liability

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Persons with T1 and T2 certifications will be given selection preference in order to assist them in meeting their continuing education requirements.

  • Currently employed as a telecommunicator at a recognized PSAP in the State of Washington

Who can attend our classes?

  • Public safety telecommunicators employed at a recognized PSAP in the State of Washington.
  • Employees from other call centers, government agencies or security departments will not be accepted.

Cancelation policy:

  • If you are canceling your employee from the class, we need at least (2) two week’s notice before the start of class
  • Student no-shows or cancelations with less than (2) two weeks from the start of class will be billed $125
  • Materials must be returned from canceled student registrations
  • The Telecommunicator Program will cancel a class due to low enrollment 4 weeks out from the class


If the student fails, they must retake the class. There is no retesting for this class.
