The U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Secret Service highly recommend that K–20 schools establish a team process with community stakeholders to address students who make or pose threats to kill or of serious violence. The objectives of a student threat assessment team are:
- Assess threats of potentially harmful or lethal behavior and determine the level of concern and action
- Organize resources and strategies to manage situations involving students that pose a threat to other students and/or staff.
- Maintain a sense of safety.
In this one day class attendees will learn to utilize the Salem-Keizer system of Student Threat Assessment which is considered a best practice approach by U.S. DOE and Secret Service. System comprises of a Campus Level Protocol (L1) which allows site based teams to conduct a thorough screening of threats. System also incorporates a Community Level (L2) Team Process that is available for additional consultation, investigation, and resource allocation.
- Gain a working knowledge of the steps and procedures for a threat assessment team to determine level of risk posed by a student, and respond and coordinate management of an emerging concern at school.
- Provide the Campus Level (L1) Team with critical information to uniform a best practice approach to screening and assessing a threat in a school setting.
- Establishing and coordinating best practice facilitation of process with Community Level (L2) Team.
- Ensure attendees learn threat notification mandate under WA State RCW 28A.320.128 and Clery Act for best practice approach.
- Ensure attendees understand FERPA and Clery Act mandates for sharing confidential information, and maintaining LEU (Law Enforcement Unit) records for FERPA compliance.
Recommended persons to serve on Student Threat Assessment Team:
- School Administrator / Department Head
- Counselor / Psychologist
- Law Enforcement / SRO / School Security
- Mental Health Professional
- Intervention Specialist
- Any qualified staff with qualities that would be an asset to the team
Dress Code & Identification:
- Uniforms, agency logo clothing or business casual attire is appropriate for classroom wear.
- Visible Agency official ID is recommended (badges / agency IDs) while on campus.
- Deadline: If, for any reason, it becomes necessary to cancel the application, you must notify the Registrar via email
