This class is: Sponsored (What does this mean?)

This class is 80 hours in length and is designed to provide training for entry-level juvenile justice employees responsible for the care, custody and safety of youth housed in county and state custody facilities. Representative job classes include, but are not limited to, Juvenile Detention Officers, Juvenile Correctional Officers, and Juvenile Security Officers. This academy is geared to those employees that have primary security, safety and group supervision responsibilities, not for those employees that carry an active caseload.

As Mandated by WAC 139-10-240, this Academy includes the following core institutional management skills. Security Management, Behavior Management, Supervision and Discipline of Youth, Proper Use of Physical Force. Defensive Tactics training is part of this course and a fitness waiver is required. Upon hire, applicants must be registered to attend our 80 hour Juvenile Corrections Officer Academies training within the initial first 6 months per WAC 139-10-210.

The WSCJTC requires applicants to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to entry into the academy. All academy recruits must be physically able to actively and fully participate in the defensive tactics and other required physical activities in accordance with WAC 139-10-212.
