FBI Crime Scene Processing & Introduction to Forensics, Course #5501

Course Description:

This is a basic level course intended for detectives and other law enforcement personnel relatively new to processing crime scenes.  The course is taught by multiple members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Evidence Response Team. It includes classroom instruction and practical exercises outside of the classroom.  Instruction topics include:

  • Basic crime scene management
  • Latent prints
  • Serology and DNA
  • Impressions
  • Alternate light source
  • Searching vehicles
  • Collecting scent
  • Documentation
  • Photography
  • Sketching
  • Recovering human remains
  • Autopsy procedures
  • Case studies

The course culminates in the students dividing into teams and processing a mock crime scene, using the techniques learned from the course.  It is a fast-paced course and each block of instruction builds on the ones before it.


Prerequisite: Officers seeking introductory or refresher training on Crime Scene Management and processing.

Dress Code & Identification:

  • Visitors attending training at WSCJTC are encouraged to wear their agency logo shirt/uniform or agency ID badge while on campus.  If you are not wearing agency identification, you will be asked to check in at the front desk and will be provided with a clip-on visitor's identification card.
