OMVLA Volunteer Attorney Application

The Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance (OMVLA) connects Washington State service members, veterans, and their families to free legal help, including help from volunteer lawyers. Completing the application below is the first step to joining a group of legal professionals from across Washington State who are proud to serve our military and veteran community.

As a volunteer with the Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance, you will:

Improve access to justice for Washington’s military and veteran community;
Gain access to free on-demand Public Service Education CLE courses from the WSBA; and
Receive free malpractice insurance for all cases accepted through OMVLA.

We have the following volunteer lawyer opportunities:

Pro Bono Advice: Provide 30-60 minutes of advice to qualifying community members facing select civil legal issues and, as appropriate, summarize your advice verbally or in writing:
- We will email out opportunities regularly in your identified practice areas.
- There is no expectation of long-term representation, court appearances, or preparation of any filings for clients (although you may do so if you wish).
- You may also provide the client with self-help materials or other documents about their legal rights as is appropriate.

Legal Assistance Clinics: Attend legal clinics to provide advice or assistance to community members facing select civil legal issues:
- Often, clinics are limited to a specific issue area, such as wills (although not always).
- We will send out clinic volunteer opportunities in your region and practice areas. We require clients to pre-register and will, to the best of our ability, provide you with information about their legal issues ahead of time.
- Great opportunity for volunteers to provide assistance who may not have time otherwise.

We ask volunteers to commit to assisting at least one community member per year.

The Office of Military & Veteran Legal Assistance provides various civil legal services to the military and veteran community, including families of veterans and service members.
