Abstract:

This is GIS database version of the 1964 (and 1973) Water Supply Bulletin 14 "Lakes of Washington" by Ernest Wolcott. The Lakes of Washington is a two volume series developed by the WA Dept. of Conservation, Div. of Water Resources to catalog the lakes of Washington State. The publication contains information such as lake names, legal descriptions, elevations, acreages, depths, uses, fish presence, dam presence, etc. Due to limited availability of the hardcopy material, this dataset was created using Volume 1, 3rd edition (1973) and Volume 2, 2nd edition (1964). This means that half the dataset (Eastern WA) is current to 1964, the other half (Western WA) is current to 1973. Users should note that for volume 2 (Eastern WA) the "WOLCODE" field will generally not match the page number/page order as presented by the .pdf version of volume 2 from the WA Dept. of Ecology website. Users may access a scanned version of the Water Supply Bulletin 14 from the following website: <http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/eap/wsb/wsb_Lakes.html>.

There are 6 associated relational tables that supplement the main GIS feature class attribute table (wsb14_points). To avoid redundant metadata, the documentation for each table is listed below:

1) wsb14_descriptions: The full text of the narrative descriptions of each lake (related by WOLCODE to the main attribute table) - Special thanks to Mrs. Glenda Reick for compiling this important table! WOLCODE attribute is the relate/join field (described in detail in the attribute section of this metadata document). The WOL_DESCRIP field is the narrative description of each water body as given in WSB14. Many times there are abbreviations used in the description ("art" for artificial for example). See the "wsb14_txt_abrv" and "wsb14_fish_abrv" for the decoder ring. 2) wsb14_database_errors: Contains a listing of known and/or fixed errors in the dataset as noted by DNR staff. WOLCODE attribute is the relate/join field (described in detail in the attribute section of this metadata document). ERROR_FLG indicates an error/correction in the dataset ( 0 = no error, 1 = error/correction). ERROR_COMMENTS indicates what type of error (FIXED, OK, ERROR) and the status of the error. 3) wsb14_fish_abrv: The abbreviations used for the fish species described in the "wsb14_descriptions" table. ABRV_CD is the abbreviation used in the description. ABRV_TXT is the common fish species name. 4) wsb14_txt_abrv: The abbreviations used in the narrative descriptions. ABRV_CD is the abbreviation used in the description. ABRV_TXT is meaning of the abbreviation. 5) wsb14_use_abrv: The abbreviations used in the reported use(s) of each lake. ABRV_CD is the abbreviation used in the description. ABRV_TXT is meaning of the abbreviation. 6) wsb14_multi_plss: A listing of the "overflow" PLSS legal descriptions. Many times the PLSS descriptions referenced multiple sections or subsections. In those cases, the "extra" PLSS descriptions are located in this table. WOLCODE attribute is the relate/join field (described in detail in the attribute section of this metadata document). TRS_ORDER is the order in which the extra PLSS description was given in the text. T is township. R is range. RANGE_DIR indicates if the range is east (E) or west (W). SEC indicates the section. SEC_DIV indicates the PLSS subsection.

Purpose:

Ernest Wolcott states that the purpose of the Lakes of Washington volumes was to "... comprise a tabulation and evaluation of the waters contained within the State of Washington." The WA Dept. of Natural Resources created this GIS layer primarily for the purpose of using the information to assist in the management of lake/pond resources in Washington State.

Supplemental_Information:

In 2005 the WA DNR created this GIS layer from a tabular database that was created by Leslie Sikora - StreamNet Data Manager, WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. The original WDFWdatabase was QCed and improved upon by WA DNR staff, notably the text descriptions were added.

The data is accurate per the information presented in the Lakes of Washington hardcopy volumes. DNR staff went to great lengths to ensure an appropriate and correct match with the hardcopy data. Many errors in the WDFW database were corrected and noted.

Completeness_Report:

The data are complete. However, it is worth noting that many of the Lakes of WA entries make reference to multiple lakes. When the WA DFW initially made their tabular database, the number of corresponding records in the database didn't always match with the descriptions. For example, Ernest Wolcott may have referenced "3 small ponds" but the WA DFW database only included 2 records (thus two point locations) for this one entry. No attempt was made by the WA DNR to fix this problem.

1. The PLSS descriptions in the original DFW database were used to generate point locations for all records in the database. 2. The points (centered in the appropriate section or township) were moved to the appropriate locations. Not all points were matched with a DNR Hydro polygon. 3. The spatial locations were QCed against the DFW-noted hydro polygon ids. Many of DFW's hydro ids were, in the judgment of DNR, incorrect. These were corrected.
