Abstract:
This is a GIS database version United State Geologic Survey (USGS) water quality sample locations and parameters for a variety of lakes, reservoirs, and mines in WA State. These data were downloaded on 06/06/2005 from the USGS "Water Quality Samples for Washington" website at <http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/wa/nwis/qwdata>. There is no guarantee that these are the most current data available. In all, 736 water quality sample locations are represented as well as 58,039 database records of water quality parameters that were collected between 1970 and 2003. Over 500 different water quality parameters are included in the dataset, however, no sample location had all 500+ parameters collected. Parameters ranging from "water temperature" to "Antimony, bed sediment smaller than 2 millimeters, wet sieved (native water), total digestion, dry weight, micrograms per gram" were collected.

A series of 736 points were created from USGS lat/long data and moved to correspond with the DNR Hydro polygon layer. Not all points were moved, but where applicable, the distance and bearing of the move was documented. Each point was given a value in the DNR_CD field to describe the accuracy of the match to the DNR Hydro GIS layer. By virtue of the point being within the boundaries of the appropriate hydro polygon, users can create a spatial join or other spatial overlay that will allow them to apply the attributes of the USGS "Water Quality Samples for Washington" data to their polygon hydro layer of choice.

There is one table (usgs_sample_data_20050606) that relates to the main GIS feature class attribute table (usgs_sample_loc_20050606) using SITE_NO as the relate/join field. Usgs_sample_data_20050606 contains all the water quality parameters and results, and has separate metadata that describes only the attributes of the table.

Purpose:
The WA Dept. of Natural Resources created this GIS layer primarily for the purpose of using the information to assist in the management of lake/pond resources in Washington State.

Raw sample location lat/long were imported to ArcGIS and projected to the DNR Corporate projection. 3. If necessary, the points were moved to overlay the appropriate DNR Hydro polygon. 4. In the point was moved, the distance and bearing of the move was documented (using planar distance and north azimuth bearing). 5. The water quality data were downloaded from <http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/wa/nwis/qwdata> after specifying a site type of "Lake/Reservoir". 6. The tab delimited text file was edited for format and imported to a v9.0 sp3 ESRI Personal Geodatabase.
