These occur alone as single arc watercourses representing streams, ditches, or pipelines, or as centerlines through water body polygons such as double-banked streams, lakes, impoundments, reservoirs, wet areas, or glaciers. WBWS (WBHYDRO) and WC (WCHYDRO) are edited daily and simultaneously; updates are posted weekly for internal DNR use and monthly for external use. Attribute interrelationships within WBWS (WBHYDRO) and spatial and attribute interrelationships between WBWS (WBHYDRO) and WC (WCHYDRO) are maintained.

WCHYDRO and WBHYDRO together make up the most complete and up to date hydrography layer for the State of Washington. WCHYDRO contains watercourses represented as arcs or lines. WBWS (WBHYDRO) and WC (WCHYDRO) are edited daily and simultaneously; updates are posted weekly for internal DNR use and monthly for external use. Attribute interrelationships within WBWS (WBHYDRO) and spatial and attribute interrelationships between WBWS (WBHYDRO) and WC (WCHYDRO) are maintained.

 

Purpose:

The Watercourse (WC, WCHYDRO) and Water Body/Water Shoreline (WBWS, WBHYDRO) Hydrography layers support the implementation of the new Forest Practices Fish Habitat Water Type Map. The primary purpose of these data is to aid in the application of timber harvest and other forest practices regulations and activities by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) within the forested areas of the state. Other uses include cartography and analysis where hydrographic data is required.

Within DNR, the Watercourse and Waterbody/Water Shoreline datasets are available through ROPA as WCHYDRO and WBHYDRO Personal GeoDatabase Feature Classes and through /database/covers as WC and WBWS arc/node topology ARC/INFO coverages. Externally, these data sets are available for download through the DNR website as WC and WBWS in zipped ARC/INFO export files (.e00).

Process description:

Data for forested state, private, and some federal and tribal lands were compiled by DNR Photogrammetry unit from 1992 through 1994. Data for all other areas of the state were received in various formats from federal agencies and processed by DNR GIS Cartography unit from 1995 through 1996. Data received a major data model revision and conversion completed in May 2004. Data receives continuous updates through the Timber/Fish/Wildlife Agreement Water Type Modification Form review/concurrence process. Data deployed upon completion of the new fish habitat based Water Type attribution (Western Washington, March 1, 2005; Eastern Washington, March 1, 2006).

DNR Forest Practices Fish Habitat Water Type Code. Implemented for Western Washington March 1, 2005 and for Eastern Washington March 1, 2006. Used in conjunction with WAC 222-16-030 and 222-16-031 and the Washington Forest Practices Board Manual. For stream features, this Code is based on a multi-parameter, field verified geographic information system (GIS) logistic regression model.  The water typing model is based on thousands of field surveys of fish presence and fish habitat.  Other model parameters are gradient, elevation, basin size and average annual precipitation derived from the US Geological Survey's digital elevation model (DEM) for the state of Washington. Technical considerations required that the model be developed on a "virtual" stream network system derived from the DEM database.   The DEM-based model results were then transferred to the DNR's hydrographic GIS "map" (WCHYDRO) in order to implement the new habitat based water types.

Purpose:

The Watercourse (WC, WCHYDRO) and Water Body/Water Shoreline (WBWS, WBHYDRO) Hydrography layers support the implementation of the new Forest Practices Fish Habitat Water Type Map. The Forest Practices Water Typing system was developed and is maintained solely for the regulation of forest practices (WAC 222). The primary purpose of these data is to aid in the application of timber harvest and other forest practices regulations and activities by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Other uses include cartography and analysis where hydrographic data is required.

Data for forested state, private, and some federal and tribal lands were compiled by DNR Photogrammetry unit from 1992 through 1994. Data for all other areas of the state were received in various formats from federal agencies and processed by DNR GIS Cartography unit from 1995 through 1996. Data received a major data model revision and conversion completed in May 2004. Data receives continuous updates through the Timber/Fish/Wildlife Agreement Water Type Modification Form review/concurrence process. Data deployed upon completion of new fish habitat based Water Type attribution (Western Washington, March 1, 2005; Eastern Washington, March 1, 2006).

Resource description: Within DNR, the Watercourse and Waterbody/Water Shoreline datasets are available through ROPA as WCHYDRO and WBHYDRO Personal GeoDatabase Feature Classes and through /database/covers as WC and WBWS arc/node topology ARC/INFO coverages. Externally, these data sets are available for download through the DNR website as WC and WBWS in zipped ARC/INFO export files (.e00), (entire state: approx. 340Mb, or by county - from 2 to 29 Mb). Technical prerequisites:

ARC/INFO export files (.e00) may be imported into Workstation ARC/INFO as coverages. These may then be edited in Workstation ARC/INFO ArcEdit. If using ArcGIS, one may use the Import from Interchange File Conversion Tool in ArcCatalog to import the coverages, then Export them as feature classes into a geodatabase or Export the coverages to shapefiles so that they may be edited in ArcInfo ArcMap or ArcView ArcMap.
