Abstract:
This is a GIS database version of the 1976 Water Supply Bulletin 43 "Reconnaissance Data on Lakes in Washington" vol. 1 - 7 by G.C. Bortleson, N.P. Dion, J.B. McConnell, and L.M. Nelson. Water Supply Bulletin 43 (WSB43) is a seven volume series that describes the physical, cultural, and chemical characteristics of 760 lakes in WA State. Topics such as lake volume, number of nearshore homes, secchi-disk visibility, etc. (more than 63 attributes in all) are presented for each lake. Users may access a scanned hardcopy version of the Water Supply Bulletin 43 from the following website: <http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/eap/wsb/wsb_Lakes.html>.

A series of 760 points (each representing a specific lake described in WSB43) were created and moved to correspond with the DNR Hydro polygon layer. Each point was given a value in the DNR_CD field to describe the accuracy of the match. By virtue of the point being within the boundaries of the appropriate polygon, users can create a spatial join or other spatial overlay that will allow them to apply the attributes of the WSB43 to their polygon hydro layer of choice.

There are six tables that relate to the main GIS feature class attribute table (wsb43_points) using the WSB43_CD field. The wsb43_main and wsb43_wq1 tables have separate metadata describing only the attributes and their definitions. Since the other wsb43_wq* tables share the same attribute definitions as the wsb43_wq1 table, metadata for wsb43_wq1 can be applied to the other water quality tables. The following is a summary of the related tables and what they contain:

1) wsb43_main: Contains the information that appears in the physical data, cultural data, and remarks sections of WSB43. 2) wsb43_wq1: Contains the water quality data for sample site 1 (if present). 3) wsb43_wq2: Contains the water quality data for sample site 2 (if present). 4) wsb43_wq3: Contains the water quality data for sample site 3 (if present). 5) wsb43_wq4: Contains the water quality data for sample site 4 (if present). 6) wsb43_wq5: Contains the water quality data for sample site 5 (if present).

Purpose:
The WA Dept. of Natural Resources created this GIS layer primarily for the purpose of using the information to assist in the management of lake/pond resources in Washington State.

The data is accurate per the information presented in the WSB43 hardcopy volumes. A QAQC assessment of the data entry was performed (see DNR_QC_FLG, DNR_ER_FLG, and DNR_ER_DESC fields) where 30 randomly selected lakes were inspected. After finding 1 mistake out of more than 1890 parameters entered for the 30 lakes, it was determined that the data was entered with an accuracy greater than 99.9%.
